Each and every day there are internet technology developers that are looking to find new ways to tie existing internet merchants together with people that may have a need for their products. Right now, internet advertising is a multi-billion dollar business, and the companies that can find new ways to drive traffic to retail websites are the ones that are cashing in on the rising success of the internet. Pixazza is one such technology innovator, and with companies like Google backing them up it looks like Pixazza just may be the newest way to advertise and make a lot of money on the internet.

Imagine that you are looking at a candid picture of your favorite celebrity as they are out on the town, and they are dressed in some very elegant clothes. Now imagine that you wish you could find out where they got their clothing, and how you may be able to get some of that clothing for yourself. Maybe you are just curious as to the cost of the clothing, or you may even just be wondering where they could have possibly shopped to get the garments they are wearing. Would it not be convenient and great to be able to run your mouse over that picture and see all of the purchasing information you need to know about that clothing, and then have the option of going to that retail site and making a purchase? With the technology being developed by Pixazza you will be able to do just that, and make your celebrity clothing dreams come true.

Pixazza How it Works

Right now the technology only applies to clothes, but if it catches on with the public then development could begin on making this sort of technology available on most of the images you see in internet photos. The project is being funded by Google through their investment company called Google Ventures, and it is an example of how Google is attempting to expand the influence of the internet into more areas of people’s lives.

As with any new technology, the Pixazza experiment has its good points and its bad points. The good points are that any picture could instantly become a celebrity commercial endorsing clothing and other products without needing the consent of the celebrity. People can take any image on the internet and apply this technology to it to offer a catalog of the products being seen in the image. It sounds like it could be a bonanza to internet retailers, and an excellent way to generate even more advertising revenue for internet webmasters. But the downside is something that still needs to be worked out before the technology can become a success.

Right now a user is alerted to the existence of a Pixazza link on an image with a small yellow price tag icon. The user runs their mouse over the icon, and the information on the product appears. The problem here is the annoying presence of several yellow tag icons in one image. The solution could be to post the image twice, but then that borders on the image becoming a commercial.

The other problem is associating celebrities with products that they are not paid to endorse. Celebrities protect their images very vigorously, and to use that image without permission to promote a product could run into legal problems.

These reasons are why Pixazza is still under development, but with the help of Google the developers at Pixazza are hoping to get their product working just right and make it available to the public.

Google Local Results

In a blog, Google talks about expanded local search results:

We like to make search as easy as we can, so we’ve just finished the worldwide rollout of local search results on a map, which will now appear even when you don’t type in a location. When you search on Google, we will guess where you are and show results near you. How do we guess your location? In most cases, we match your IP address to a broad geographical location. You can also specify your likely location using the “Change location” link on the top right corner, above the map. We try to make our guesses as good as they can be so that whether you’re shopping for [groceries], [sporting goods] or [flowers], or looking for your [bank], your [gym], or the [post office], you can just say what you want, and we’ll try to find it right where you are. You can also search for specific stores or street addresses near you, like [cornelia st cafe] in New York, for example.

As of today, AdSense for mobile content publishers who have configured their sites to display mobile image ads can now have ads served to their sites from DoubleClick Mobile. This means more advertisers for AdSense for mobile content publishers, more inventory for DoubleClick Mobile advertisers, and more ad relevance for browsers of the mobile web.

Google October 2007 Page Rank Update Harms Many Link Farms!

Many sites have seen a big drop in PageRank. Some even from 9 to 6. Hours later, many others have reported on this. Most of the sites mentioned above have a lot of interlinking going on between them.

Philipp Lenssen says that, “Interestingly enough, the last time I checked, Google’s own AdWords still allowed text link brokers to advertise their systems not sure if that’s still the case.”

Come to think of it, Google Webmaster Help Center’s guidelines lays down the rules straight and clear:

“Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.”

Duncan Riley, feels that

“The only clear change appears to be among large scale blog networks and similar link farms, where each site in the network provides hundreds of outgoing links on each page of the blog to other blogs in the network, in some cases creating tens, even hundred of thousands of cross links. Previously such behavior has been rewarded by Google with high page rank, although it would now appear that this loop hole may now be shut”.

Blogs in the TechCrunch network (we don’t link heavily on each page… nor do we have a particularly large network) and the Gawker Media network (who like us don’t go nuts with links) maintained their page rank whilst blogs across a range of other networks saw big decreases. The AOL owned Weblogs Inc was not immune, with leading Gadget blog Engadget dropping from PR 7 to PR5, Autoblog (6 to 4) and DownloadSquad (5 to 4)
