We could talk for days about all of the elements needed to make a successful website and we wouldn’t be wasting any of our time, there are a lot of optimization and content elements that could have you redesigning your site over and over. But to get right down to the grind, keywords are the most important aspect of a site, no ifs ands or buts. If you fail with your keywords, it would be just about impossible to imagine how your site could be successful. Let’s talk about the number one most important element of all, how to find highly profitable keywords.

Highly Profitable Keywords

Everyone knows that keywords are crucial to a site, however what makes a keyword are good keyword? What are the guidelines that let you know how to find highly profitable keywords and not ones that will sink your ship, so to speak? The answer is that highly profitable keywords will be words or phrases which are frequently searched for in major search engines, but that are not already being used by a large amount of websites. Sound tricky, doesn’t it? Well, it is a bit tricky; however that is the magic of the Internet. And we will discuss several ways on how you can find highly profitable keywords to either optimize your site better or to get a new website off to a great start.

One of the first things that you may wish to do is to get out a pad of paper instead of getting on the keyboard. Brainstorm for a few moments. Your site must have a theme, it must have a focus, a certain set of words that tell what your website is about. The secret is to slightly change those words so that they are still words that are searched for, but your competition is lower. For example if your site is about soap, millions of people type in the very generalized word “soap”, too many for you to compete against. Therefore, you will need to come up with profitable keywords for your site, and use a different keyword that does have a good amount of use, but not so much that you are hidden by your competition.

One great tool for finding highly profitable keywords is the Wordtracker. It functions as many keyword generators do, you enter the keyword that you had in mind and Wordtracker will suggest hundreds of alternatives, all similar to your idea, but slightly different, perhaps finding you that perfect niche that we are all in search of.

You may also wish to check out Google Adwords Keyword tool, originally meant to help advertisers figure out how much to bid on words, you can use this in much the same way. You can enter one keyword or several at the same time. It also allows you to filter results if you wish, for example one filter will keep out profanity. Then, suggestions are listed out for you along with number. You’ll notice that the numbers let you know how many times each certain keyword was searched for in the last month. In some cases information is not available, and while it is not stated, one would assume that the number is very low.

Keyword spy is another resource that works a bit differently. You can actually type in a keyword and it will let you know which sites are currently implementing that very same keyword. You can then also see which other keywords that are using as well.

If a page started to have more than that many links, there was a chance that the page would be so long that Google would truncate the page and wouldn’t index the entire page. These days, Google will index more than 100K of a page, but there’s still a good reason to recommend keeping to under a hundred links or so: the user experience. If you’re showing well over 100 links per page, you could be overwhelming your users and giving them a bad experience. A page might look good to you until you put on your “user hat” and see what it looks like to a new visitor. But in some cases, it might make sense to have more than a hundred links. Does Google automatically consider a page spam if your page has over 100 links? No, not at all. The “100 links” recommendation is in the “Design and content” guidelines section, and it’s the Quality guidelines that contain the things that we consider web spam (stuff like hidden text, doorway pages, installing malware, etc.). Can pages with over 100 links be spammy? Sure, especially if those links are hidden or keyword-stuffed. But pages with lots of links are not automatically considered spammy by Google.

5 SEO Myths

Similar to people and culture, Search Engine Optimization do have myths as well .I was looking through an SEO forum once when I came across a post that asks if web sites need to be updated frequently to optimize traffic. My first thought was, of course because the World Wide Web is constantly changing, web sites have to the updated to keep the content fresh as search engines like fresh and frequently updated content.

Myth # 1. Submitting your URL to search engines is a must.

This is an old school SEO rule. It may have worked years ago, but today it’s no longer necessary to submit sites to search engines. If you start external link building then your web site will be automatically indexed by search engines sooner or later. However it is necessary to submit your URL to at least Google, Yahoo and MSN. By submitting your URL to Google and Yahoo you can take advantage of their tools such as Google Webmaster Tool, Yahoo Site Explorer etc.

Myth # 2. The more times the keyword is repeated, the higher the web site will rank.

Now, this is something you need to look into. Search engine uses different algorithms that have different factors for ranking sites. The best keyword density would be 3-15%. Any higher than that and the search engine will penalize your site. This measure was adopted by various search engines to stop spammer spamming the keywords.

Myth # 3. Put hidden links in your pages to rank higher.

Stuffing hidden links in pages will only get your site penalized or worst banned. Some search engines will label your site as spam and keep it off its pages for good. The links in your web site shall be in same colour as background colour of pages. This is considered as spamming, specially by Google.

Myth # 4. Contents need to be 250 words at all times.

I used to follow this rule in the past. I made sure that all contents in my web site were 250 words in length. When my friend saw what I was doing he told me I was following a silly rule. Short copies or long copies rank well in search engines. So, it doesn’t matter how long my copies are as long as it is incorporated with the right keywords. It is the quality of relevant content which counts. You may not necessarily have all the pages in your web site with 250 words. A typical example is contact us page which would be hard to populate with any content than your telephone numbers and e-mails. But for pages which are informative try to have as much content as possible.

It is also good idea to spread long content into additional pages and provide navigation to these pages from each other.

Myth # 5. Adding meta tags will help rank your site.

Meta tags used to be very important element in the past for indexing and ranking which is no more the case. However still there are search engines which give importance to meta tags such as keywords and description.

I would recommend to have at least keywords and description meta tags on all of your web pages which shall be relevant to the pages and shall not be spammed.

There are people who go on saying that meta tags are completely redundant which is not the case.

There are just some of the many SEO myths that I have compiled here. They are all not true all the time, but some sites claim that these myths have work for them. If you decide to follow these myths, test it many times first. Remember, they may not always work. So, be careful in practicing them.

Google October 2007 Page Rank Update Harms Many Link Farms!

Many sites have seen a big drop in PageRank. Some even from 9 to 6. Hours later, many others have reported on this. Most of the sites mentioned above have a lot of interlinking going on between them.

Philipp Lenssen says that, “Interestingly enough, the last time I checked, Google’s own AdWords still allowed text link brokers to advertise their systems not sure if that’s still the case.”

Come to think of it, Google Webmaster Help Center’s guidelines lays down the rules straight and clear:

“Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.”

Duncan Riley, feels that

“The only clear change appears to be among large scale blog networks and similar link farms, where each site in the network provides hundreds of outgoing links on each page of the blog to other blogs in the network, in some cases creating tens, even hundred of thousands of cross links. Previously such behavior has been rewarded by Google with high page rank, although it would now appear that this loop hole may now be shut”.

Blogs in the TechCrunch network (we don’t link heavily on each page… nor do we have a particularly large network) and the Gawker Media network (who like us don’t go nuts with links) maintained their page rank whilst blogs across a range of other networks saw big decreases. The AOL owned Weblogs Inc was not immune, with leading Gadget blog Engadget dropping from PR 7 to PR5, Autoblog (6 to 4) and DownloadSquad (5 to 4)

How do you look for information? You search the internet, right? If so, you’re not alone. According to Marketing Sherpa, almost 134 million people in the U.S. regularly use search engines when looking for information online. Of that number, 63 percent look only at the first page of results at most.

And if you want your site to be there, you need to put a family of strategies called search marketing a catch-all term for search engine optimization and pay-per-click advertising to work for your business.

SEO encompasses the strategies for earning top rankings in free search engines. These are called “organic” or “natural” listings. You can actually direct the way your site’s listed and improve your ranking by giving the search engines what they’re looking for.

Keep the spiders coming back with frequent new content. The more fresh, relevant content they find, the higher the search engine spiders are likely to rank your site. Keep all the copy on your pages current, including any changes or updates to your business or products. And archive your newsletters or bulletins on your site. A blog or forum also keeps people heading back for daily updates and discussion.
Fine-tune your keyword density. Make sure you integrate your keywords as naturally as possible into your copy. You won’t keep your visitors’ attention if the text on your site is just a jumbled bunch of keywords. Aim for keyword density of 4 to 6 percent.
Collect links from other sites that are considered reputable and relevant. Natural, relevant inbound links are search engine gold. Focus your strategy on requesting one-way links from sites with high natural rankings in search engines. Also, put out “link bait”–quality content that contains a link back to your site. And don’t forget the power of social networking. By taking part in online communities or uploading your video to a site like YouTube, you can drive new traffic to your website and get new sites linking to yours.

Use RSS To Boost Your Business

Are you wondering what you can use RSS for right now? Here are some practical examples of RSS at work.

Use Your Own Content
Almost ANY web based content can be transformed into an RSS feed. The only real requirement is that the information changes regularly.

Thoughts/Commentary
You’ve probably heard of the term “blog” or “weblog”. It’s a page that displays (in chronological order) a series of writings on whatever the author wants to write about. While a normal blog also allows others to add their comments to yours, you don’t have to offer that functionality.

Set up a page where you regularly add your thoughts on all sorts of issues – or just one issue – with the most recent post at the top of the page. Include these items in an RSS feed, and you’ve got a whole new audience for your pearls of wisdom.

Newsletters
If you regularly produce an email newsletter, then consider converting it to RSS format as well as continuing to email it. After all, your newsletters ARE also shown on your web site… aren’t they?

New Links
If you have a links directory, considering creating an RSS feed of the new links added to your directory in the last week or so. If you have a category structure within that directory, with links added often, you can create a feed for each category.

Using Content From OTHER Web Sites
If a site offers an RSS feed for people to subscribe to, you can possibly use that feed on your site. Just check the terms and conditions on the site FIRST to see if you can reproduce the feed. If in doubt – send an email or phone them to ask permission.

I have only written about 60 articles. But the benefits have been enormous; spreading my content all over the web and building one-way links back to my websites and blogs.

There are a few techniques I use to extend the effectiveness of my articles. First, I always start with a keyword or keyword phrase that I want to target with a particular article. I do major, major, major research on my article’s keywords, using sites like overture.com, and a few others.

I chëck how much competition there is for the keywords. Combining a new keyword with ones you already have positioned high for in the search engines works well. For example, I have optimized my site for the keyword ‘Frëe’, it appears throughout my site. When I introduce a new keyword phrase I sometimes combine it with Frëe. Pick the right keyword combination and you will gain an edge over your competition more quickly.

Always put your keyword phrase into the title of your article. I also make it a habit of not picking the top keywords in a niche, I go for middle ranked keywords – I am better assured that I will rank on the first page SERPs for these lower keywords. Why waste valuable time shooting for the stars when you can easily land on the moon!

I submit my articles mainly to a short list of online article directories ( ezinearticles.com, buzzle.com, isnare.com, goarticles.com, ideamarketers.com, and articlealley.com ) these work the best for me. These sites rank well in the search engines and even though the surfer may go to another site to read your article first, it then delivers a much more warmed up and targeted visitor to your own site.

Other webmasters from your niche will pick up your high quality articles and place them on their sites. Organically growing more related one-way links to your site. Google looks very favorably on these one-way links and will reward your site for having them.

Article marketing is one Organic SEO tactic every website should be using. Instead of paying high prices for seo services, why not write or hire someone to create keyword rich articles for your site. The benefits will surprise you.
