We could talk for days about all of the elements needed to make a successful website and we wouldn’t be wasting any of our time, there are a lot of optimization and content elements that could have you redesigning your site over and over. But to get right down to the grind, keywords are the most important aspect of a site, no ifs ands or buts. If you fail with your keywords, it would be just about impossible to imagine how your site could be successful. Let’s talk about the number one most important element of all, how to find highly profitable keywords.

Highly Profitable Keywords

Everyone knows that keywords are crucial to a site, however what makes a keyword are good keyword? What are the guidelines that let you know how to find highly profitable keywords and not ones that will sink your ship, so to speak? The answer is that highly profitable keywords will be words or phrases which are frequently searched for in major search engines, but that are not already being used by a large amount of websites. Sound tricky, doesn’t it? Well, it is a bit tricky; however that is the magic of the Internet. And we will discuss several ways on how you can find highly profitable keywords to either optimize your site better or to get a new website off to a great start.

One of the first things that you may wish to do is to get out a pad of paper instead of getting on the keyboard. Brainstorm for a few moments. Your site must have a theme, it must have a focus, a certain set of words that tell what your website is about. The secret is to slightly change those words so that they are still words that are searched for, but your competition is lower. For example if your site is about soap, millions of people type in the very generalized word “soap”, too many for you to compete against. Therefore, you will need to come up with profitable keywords for your site, and use a different keyword that does have a good amount of use, but not so much that you are hidden by your competition.

One great tool for finding highly profitable keywords is the Wordtracker. It functions as many keyword generators do, you enter the keyword that you had in mind and Wordtracker will suggest hundreds of alternatives, all similar to your idea, but slightly different, perhaps finding you that perfect niche that we are all in search of.

You may also wish to check out Google Adwords Keyword tool, originally meant to help advertisers figure out how much to bid on words, you can use this in much the same way. You can enter one keyword or several at the same time. It also allows you to filter results if you wish, for example one filter will keep out profanity. Then, suggestions are listed out for you along with number. You’ll notice that the numbers let you know how many times each certain keyword was searched for in the last month. In some cases information is not available, and while it is not stated, one would assume that the number is very low.

Keyword spy is another resource that works a bit differently. You can actually type in a keyword and it will let you know which sites are currently implementing that very same keyword. You can then also see which other keywords that are using as well.

Google Tests New “Show More” & Related Words AdSense Units

A DigitalPoint Forums thread reports spotting new Google AdSense units being tested. It appears Google is mixing a typical text ad unit with what are called link units.

Here is a screen capture taken from the forum thread: Google AdSense Link & Text Ad Unit Mixed. Notice the links at the bottom of the ad. You can click on the image or go to the thread to see a full size version. These ads are also being tested on other ad formats, as you can see on page two of the thread. I was unable to reproduce the ads, but they seem to be real.

There were very few ways of making money from websites at one point, affiliate schemes, banners ads, membership fees, selling products. The wise people at the Google plex have come up with a novel idea, they will place ads on your pages that are relevant to your content, these ads are taken from their large database of contextual advertisers – Adwords. When some one visits your site and clicks on an ad Google get paid an agreed amount by the advertiser – Google then shares some of that money with you.

Google allow you to change the look and feel of the advert that is shown on your site and also the placement, by doing this you can place it in highly visible spots on your page and also use colours that may attract more attention.

There are adsense publishers that use automated software spiders to click on ads on their own sites in a bid to drive up their monthly earnings. This threatens to close the program as Google are then forced to explain to the Adword advertisers where the money is going and how Google plan to police the situation. In the press recently there has been a high profile court case of Google click fraud where some using the same tactic as above has been taken to court by Google – let this be a lesson to all adsense publishers with click bot scripts. Google are serious about this and will act upon all abuse to their system.
