5 SEO Myths

Similar to people and culture, Search Engine Optimization do have myths as well .I was looking through an SEO forum once when I came across a post that asks if web sites need to be updated frequently to optimize traffic. My first thought was, of course because the World Wide Web is constantly changing, web sites have to the updated to keep the content fresh as search engines like fresh and frequently updated content.

Myth # 1. Submitting your URL to search engines is a must.

This is an old school SEO rule. It may have worked years ago, but today it’s no longer necessary to submit sites to search engines. If you start external link building then your web site will be automatically indexed by search engines sooner or later. However it is necessary to submit your URL to at least Google, Yahoo and MSN. By submitting your URL to Google and Yahoo you can take advantage of their tools such as Google Webmaster Tool, Yahoo Site Explorer etc.

Myth # 2. The more times the keyword is repeated, the higher the web site will rank.

Now, this is something you need to look into. Search engine uses different algorithms that have different factors for ranking sites. The best keyword density would be 3-15%. Any higher than that and the search engine will penalize your site. This measure was adopted by various search engines to stop spammer spamming the keywords.

Myth # 3. Put hidden links in your pages to rank higher.

Stuffing hidden links in pages will only get your site penalized or worst banned. Some search engines will label your site as spam and keep it off its pages for good. The links in your web site shall be in same colour as background colour of pages. This is considered as spamming, specially by Google.

Myth # 4. Contents need to be 250 words at all times.

I used to follow this rule in the past. I made sure that all contents in my web site were 250 words in length. When my friend saw what I was doing he told me I was following a silly rule. Short copies or long copies rank well in search engines. So, it doesn’t matter how long my copies are as long as it is incorporated with the right keywords. It is the quality of relevant content which counts. You may not necessarily have all the pages in your web site with 250 words. A typical example is contact us page which would be hard to populate with any content than your telephone numbers and e-mails. But for pages which are informative try to have as much content as possible.

It is also good idea to spread long content into additional pages and provide navigation to these pages from each other.

Myth # 5. Adding meta tags will help rank your site.

Meta tags used to be very important element in the past for indexing and ranking which is no more the case. However still there are search engines which give importance to meta tags such as keywords and description.

I would recommend to have at least keywords and description meta tags on all of your web pages which shall be relevant to the pages and shall not be spammed.

There are people who go on saying that meta tags are completely redundant which is not the case.

There are just some of the many SEO myths that I have compiled here. They are all not true all the time, but some sites claim that these myths have work for them. If you decide to follow these myths, test it many times first. Remember, they may not always work. So, be careful in practicing them.

Keywords selection is a very important process before you start applying SEO to your website. This is because without proper keyword planning, your SEO effort will not bring you any conversion as visitors to your site are not targeted at all. Relevancy is the key here.

When you are doing your keyword research, it is important for you to choose the most relevant keywords for your business. Basically, keywords can be categorized into 3 types, which are: Too Hot Keywords, Just Right Keywords, and Too Cold Keywords. “Too Hot Keywords” are words like “florists”, “translation”, or “gifts”.

These types of keywords are too generic, which do not seem to be targeted enough to get conversions. These keywords usually bring in high search volume but the conversion may not be as ideal as targeting keywords which falls into the “Just Right” category. For SEO, it does make more sense to target keywords that fall in the Just Right category. As for “Too Cold Keywords”, they are usually long-tail key phrases like “corporate gifts for any event and budget”. When SEO is done correctly, you will get traffic from the long tail phrases due to the overall targeted keyword theme. So what do I mean by targeted keyword theme?

In order to achieve a targeted keyword theme, it really depends on the content that you put on your website. Unique, informative and keyword targeted content is something that you need in order to succeed in SEO. This is because long tail keywords usually take up 60% – 70% of overall organic traffic of a website and it is something every optimizer must capitalize on. So when your website overall content revolves around a particular theme. Although the traffic from long tail are spilled-overs from page 3, 4 or 5 of the SERPs, these traffic are very targeted and may result in conversions.

The bad new is that an optimizer will not be able to predict what kinds of long tail keywords that searchers will use. Therefore, long tail SEO can only be done by targeting the right keyword theme and creating relevant content.

When coming up with long tail content, just treat yourself as an educator. Write informative articles to educate your target market about the product or service that you are providing. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as we know and detest it is obsolete in this day and age. When some while ago Philipp asked me to write an article How do I optimize websites I couldnt do it: The way SEO works in Germany on Google.de can not really work for international websites in English. Moreover nowadays you do not need conventional SEO tactics to have success on the Net or in Google. In order to make a site succeed in these times you have to forget everything you know about on page optimization and link building first.

Now we can start our ten step guide to Google and traffic heaven.

His advice on what to do instead of SEO to promote your website is pretty solid”but man, it sure walks like SEO and quacks like SEO.

Discover your niche”Be different, choose a topic or product that not everybody else already covers or sells. Discovering it is not to be confused with keyword research as in conventional SEO. You try to introduce a new niche not just obeying the Google users demands.
Use WordPress”Thats WordPress. Instead of on page optimization you can install WordPress that is search engine friendly out of the box. Well, dont tell the large number of SEO bloggers on WordPress whove done posts, series, vidcasts and more on making WordPress SEO-compliant.
Create a killer CSS design and submit it to CSS galleries”Traditional SEO is all about link building or getting links. Sites doing SEO often look crappy. These days people link web sites that look great just for the sake of the design.

On one pass through, its easy to accept this advice as materially different from SEO, especially with the care that Tadeusz has taken to point out the differences between SEO and his advice.

But the more I read this (as it was reblogged), the more I started recognizing some of these techniques as fairly standard SEO practices today. In Tadeuszs defense, perhaps optimizing for Google.de is unlike what is currently required to optimize for Google.com, but heres my take on his tips:

If you dont have a niche, are you sure you have a website? If your website, blog or business doesnt have a niche, thats a more fundamental failing than marketing problem. Its definitely step 1. But why limit yourself by not doing any keyword research? If you want to blog about crane flies (gross), shouldnt you somehow find out that theyre also called mosquito hawks, mosquito eaters (or skeeter eaters), gallinippers, gollywhoppers, and jimmy spinners?
Tweak WordPress to make it more SE friendly. Yes, use WordPress if it makes sense for your site. But at the minimum, do something to enhance its search engine optimization”SEO Title Tag and Add Meta Tags plugins enable you to customize various settings. Why pass up the chance to control your snippet on the Google SERP?
Over here, CSS is SEO – Okay, this is debatable, but lots of SEOs will tell you that CSS is the preferred SEO design method (specifically external CSS). And most of the time, a crappy-looking site that hires a professional SEO will get a redesign. Usually, a killer design can only increase your linkability. Submitting your CSS design to galleries to get more links back to your site is also just another example of link recruitment, which, again, is pretty old school SEO.
Get links, give links.
Promote your site/business and your brand and get links, give links – Pretty much SEO 1.0 to do something to draw attention to your site from other sites. One of the most popular ways: link to a site, get the site owners attention.
SMO - isnt perfectly equivalent with SEO, but really, where do you think the idea to heavily promote your site using social media came from? Diggers?
Avoid duplicate content/dont plagiarize and create lots of original content – Technically, I usually tell clients something about keyword-rich original content designed to be attractive to visitors and search engines, but if you selected a niche up in #1, at least you have some sort of keywords that youre using (even if youre absolutely not allowed to look at how other people articulate those concepts).
One word: linkbait. Of course it works. I linked, didnt I?
Become an authority/promote your site on other sites and recruit links.
Create original content and update regularly!

While many of these tips arent directly on-point as current SEO techniques, I think most people offering holistic SEO services will at least address everything he mentioned.

The bottom line? Why avoid the established principles of search engine friendly and search engine optimized sites? If theres something that can help make your blog, site or business rank better, trying to prove a point by not using the technique is shooting yourself in the foot. Im not trying to dismiss Tadeuszs sound advice”but I would like people to recognize that SEO isnt just keyword research and comment spam.
